    Question Books on Breeding

I know the best way to learn is from other experienced breeders, but I also want to read as much as possible. Can anyone recommend any good books on breeding please?

    Best wishes

The bible my wife refers to most is called The Book of the Bitch by J M Evans and Kay White. It is a complete guide to understanding and caring for bitches. It goes from forward planning through anatomy and pregnancy and whelping to medical problems.

It is not specific to Cavaliers but a good number of Cavalier breeders have it by the bedside whilst waiting for alitter to arrive. It was first published in 1988 by Henston.

Ringpress also have a book Breeding A Litter by J M Evans with Caroline Ackroyd-Gibson who is a well known Cavalier Breeder.

    Smile books on breeding

Moira. The ones I have to hand when whelping are
Dogs- Their Mating, Whelping and Weaning by Kay White
Successful Dog Breeding - Chris Walkowicz and Bonnie Wilcox (American publication)
Dogs and How to Breed Them - Hilary Harmar

I am unsure if these are still in circulation. Try a Google search.
If you want any more information I will be happy to help you. Norma

Thank you to everyone, the first two that Norma suggested were not available. I have ordered Dogs and How to Breed Them and as this was quite expensive will order another book next month.

    Thank you

"Dogs and how to breed them "and "The Book of the Bitch" are indeed both excellent books. I'd like to mention four other books that we have in our collection, all probably out of print but might still be available second hand if you search on the internet.
"Dog breeding for Professionals" by Dr Herbert Richards published bt t.f.h
"Dog Breeding" by Ernest Hart pub. t.f.h
"The Mating and Whelping of Dogs" by R. Portman Graham pub. Popular Books
And finally a very in-depth book not really suitable for the novice breeder but an excellent publication and this is "Reproductive Clinical Problems in the Dog" by D. Edward Jones and Joan O Joshua. I would highly recommend this particular book to all the experienced breeders as it really goes into depth on various problems without blinding you too much with veterinary science.

I second that Steve, Book of the Bitch is an excellent book. I was able to get a copy of it from England sent to Canada a couple of years ago.

Some of these books are often available on e-bay.
