    Default Foster Mothers for Litters

    Dear All

During a conversation with Shealagh Waters about my orphaned litter of whole colours that I had three years ago we got round to a suggestion that she has been making for several years about needing foster mothers for litters.

What she feels we need is somewhere where

    • people who have a need for a foster mother for a new litter can go to seek help. and
    • where people who have a bitch that has whelped a litter, and maybe, sadly lost all or most of the puppies can offer the bitch to foster a litter if needed.

Thinking about this, I thought this forum would be an ideal place to have such information. Steve has set up this section on Breeding with a sub-section for breeding emergencies, orphaned puppies and general breeding queries and tips.

We will monitor how useful this is and if necessary change the way it is set up based on your feedback.

I think that is a brilliant idea.
Does anyone know what are the risks of cross infection if pups are added to say your own very small litter from someone elses litter?

Although I don't breed anymore I think it is a wonderful idea, years ago I had a litter of eight and the little bitch went down with eclamsia ,thanks to Rita Hart who had a bitch with a couple of babies she took four off my bitch which was an absolute godsend .I hope this works out for you all.

I love this idea and have also thought about it before. Being an Equestrian i know there is a similar foundation called The National Foaling Bank, which brings together orphan foals and foster mares, set up in the 60s they have dealt with over 17,000 cases with much sucsess, i suppose very different with horses than dogs though as Foals can become dangerouse and agressive when hand reared.
They rely purly on donations, sposnsership and membership.
Although very different than Dogs i would think that advice could be sought from the NFB regarding the running of such a scheme?
With my last litter was lucky (in some ways) as one of my bitches had 7 puppies, and my other bitch had one very large pup (c-section) one week later so i was able to put the two smaller puppies to my other bitch, although they were doing well on their dam it did mean i could go back to work and not worry so much about how much they were able to feed.
I would be quite willing to take on orphaned pups but as suggested above cross infection could be a worry and something to look into.
on the other hand i would be more aprehensive about letting my pups go away to another bitch/premesis and would have to have complete confidence in the person there were to go to.

Default Frozen Semen from the UK

Does anyone know of a vet in the UK who collects and ships frozen semen? I would very much appreciate knowing of one!

    Thanks for any help.
