Eastern Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club

Saturday 14th April 2012

My thanks go to the officers and committee for inviting me to judge at an extremely well organised, friendly show. Thank you to my two, very able stewards, Peter Towse and Rick Aldous who kept the ring in good order. It was six years since I last judged bitches so all were new to me. Thank you to all exhibitors for entering this show.

The majority of the bitches that I judged today are a credit to our breed. I was able to find an excellent selection of pretty bitches with gentle expression, large, dark eyes, well tapered muzzles, correct length of neck, well laid back shoulders, level toplines and well set on tails. My final winners possessed long, silky coats of correct colour and markings with plenty of feathering.

Having discussed the merits of our major winners, my co-judge, Sue Terry and I were in complete agreement that both the tricolour dog CC winner Craigowl Santana and the ruby bitch Miletree La Vie en Rose were two excellent examples of breed type. Our final, joint decisions were that the ruby bitch should be Best in Show and Reserve B.I.S. was awarded to the graceful, well balanced blenheim bitch Bonitos Companeros Zoom Zoom. Best Puppy in Show was Pascavale Jacob bitch with the breed record holder Ch. Keyingham Branwell taking Best Veteran in Show.

A couple of observations that I would like to place on record are :

Please refrain from baiting your Cavaliers, that are no longer in puppy classes, on the table, it is so irritating trying to look at expression when all the bitch wants to do is fill her mouth with food;

I was disappointed to find several older girls with an incorrect bite: I am not a mouth fanatic and would take this into consideration in an exceptionally pleasing puppy.

Veteran bitch                 (7, 1absent)

1st      Robinson                WANDRIS GINGER ROGERS AT TUSCULANA

An 8 ½ yr old blen. with a well marked coat, in pleasing condition. She has an attractive head with dark eyes and long ear feathering. Ample neck and well placed shoulders leading into a level topline when standing and on the move. A happy showgirl.

2nd     Fisk                      ROSSCREA ROXY MUSIC

B/T with rich tan markings, good pigmentation and a very pleasing outline, being short coupled and with an excellent spring of rib. She just carried her tail a little high on the move.

3rd     Evans                    WINSUDOR GEMMA OF PURPLEBORN

Veteran bitch ( 10yrs and older)         (4, 1absent)

1st       Claydon                  RIPPLEOAK RIVER DANCER

An excellent type of bitch of the correct size. Her well marked coat is still of the correct silky texture. On the day she was immaculately presented. She possesses a most attractive head with large, dark eyes, plenty of cushioning to her well tapered muzzle and long, well feathered ears. Very good neck with well placed shoulders and level topline. She has well turned stifles and her construction allows this bitch to move so easily around the ring with a straight front and very positive drive from behind.

2nd     Lewis                    DARASTE POWER OF LOVE

A slightly more heavily marked blen. of very good breed type. Large dark eyes with the gentlest of expressions. Straight front, just not as positive behind as first behind.

3rd    Hobbs                             MADELINE BEALSAM BY BEACONSFIELD

Minor Puppy Bitch           (19, 4 absent)

This class gave me great pleasure to find so many beautiful bitch puppies of excellent breed type. Any one of the five placed could win on another day.

1st      Maclaine                LOCHBUIE TAKEN AS RED

Exuberant ruby pup with a love of life. She has a most attractive head with large, lustrous dark eyes and superb pigment. Once settled on the move it was plain to see her well put together neck, shoulders and topline. Good spring of rib with well turned stifles and short in loin. She was so sound for a youngster, with particularly excellent rear, driving movement. She has so much to like about; what a showgirl and certainly one to watch out for in the future. Best Puppy bitch.

2nd     Chapman                ELLEMICH EXCLAMATION

Well balanced blenheim, with a lovely outline both standing and on the move. Arched neck, shoulders well laid back and an attractive head. Well-feathered ears set high on a broad skull. Pleasing front movement, This owner is to be congratulated on the condition of her bitch.

3rd     Moffat                  MAIBEE CALLISTA

Puppy bitch           (9, 1absent)

1st       Hall                       TASSET MARY

The first impression that this youngster offers would suggest that she must be assured of a very rosy future. A richly marked blenheim whose outline is so correct. Gorgeous head with melting, large dark eyes, shallow stop and well tapered muzzle. Dense pigment, excellent dentition and plenty of feathering on her ears, set high on the head. Short coupled body, good spring of rib. On the table her topline is level, however she does appear to drop this occasionally on the move as her head drops towards the ground. Perhaps her handler should try showing her in a slightly different way in an attempt to correct this appearance. Good neck, well laid shoulders, straight front and well turned stifles allowed this pup to move freely around the ring. Coat in gleaming condition.

2nd     Lewis                    CINDERAIC DEVOTION TO DARASTE

A beautifully marked blenheim. who is also so well constructed and could not be denied her placing. Pleasing head with large dark eyes but just preferred the fullness of eye of the first. Well placed long, well feathered ears. Short in back, very good topline and tail carriage. Good bone, straight front, looks stylish as she moved around the ring with ease.

3rd     Rollins & Poundford POUNDROLL DAZZLING DAISY

Junior bitch           (21, 6absent)

This was the most difficult class to judge as there was little to separate the first three, all being of excellent breed type and with strong driving movement.

1st      Sansom                  MAIBEE REMEMBER ME

Stylish, well marked blenheim who made an immediate impression on entering the ring. Silky coat is in excellent condition, Large, dark round eyes, long well feathered ears. Broad skull, with tapering muzzle. Head is held so proudly as she moves around the ring. Dark nose pigment and rims around her eyes. Excellent length of neck, well laid back shoulders, level topline and very well set tail. Good bone and spring of rib. Her extremely positive movement, both coming and going was a joy to watch.

2nd     Cunningham            VERYHEN ANGELINA

This richly marked blenheim has the most glorious eyes and expression one could ever hope to find, she just needs time to grow her coat. She has a short coupled body with good spring of rib and level back. Looks great in profile moving around the ring and has one of the best, rear, driving movement seen on the day. Very little to choose between the first two.

3rd     Barwell                  CHARLOTTETOWN DIAMOND DIVA

She is a toy spaniel of an ideal size.

2nd     Towse                             MILETREE STAR OF INDIA

Another toy spaniel of lovely size, this richly marked blenheim just demands attention as she moves so easily around the ring. Her coat is very well marked and was immaculately presented. A correctly shaped head, gentle expression, lovely large, dark eyes spaced well apart,  good neck and shoulders. Ample ribcage, short coupled body, level topline & pleasing tail set. Just preferred the rear action of first.

A less mature bitch in body today compared to the winner but she has so much potential. She has a very pretty head with long ears, well set, big, round dark eyes and well cushioned muzzle. Straight front, just moving a little close behind.

3rd     Rogerson               RABYMAR PAPER MOON

Special Graduate, Blenheim or Tricolour bitch        (12, 1absent)

1st       Vorderstrasse & Kirschbaum     BONITOS CAMPANEROS ZOOM ZOOM

This richly marked, well broken blenheim bitch has one of the loveliest heads with an almost flat skull, large, lustrous, dark eyes that give her a most gentle, endearing expression one could hope to find with long well feathered ears. Dense, black pigment, both on her nose and around the rims of her eyes enhance her expression. Short coupled body with an excellent spring of rib, spirit level topline, correctly set and ever wagging tail. On the move she is graceful, elegant and has plenty of drive from behind. Her real strength is her construction with moderate length of neck, well laid shoulders and good spring of rib. She is a wonderful showgirl, totally at one with her handler. She was immaculately presented and it was my pleasure to award her the Reserve C.C. and with the total agreement of my co-judge Reserve Best in Show. A bitch who should have a very bright future and one that could make up, in my opinion, into a future Champion.
