Episodic Falling and Curly Coat/Dry Eye Syndrome
CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIELS TO BENEFIT FROM TWO NEW DNA HEALTH TESTS
The Kennel Club Genetics Centre at the Animal Health Trust launches DNA
tests for dry eye and curly coat syndrome and episodic falling.
Scientists working in the Kennel Club Genetics Centre at the
Animal Health Trust have identified the mutations responsible
for causing dry eye and curly coat syndrome and episodic falling
in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS).
Owners and breeders can access the DNA tests for dry eye and
curly coat and episodic falling, from 18 April 2011, through
the AHT's online DNA testing webshop at: http://www.ahtdnatesting.co.uk/
The Animal Health Trust (AHT) recently launched a combined DNA test for dry
eye and curly coat syndrome and episodic falling in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
As an additional service to the breed, we intend to estimate the frequency of mutant
alleles for both conditions in the UK population. This would involve collecting DNA
samples from 200 individual dogs of breeding age, widely selected to be as representative
of the population as possible so that the mutant allele frequencies of both of these
conditions can be determined with some degree of accuracy.
We aim to collect twenty samples from each club, assuming that all the regional
clubs are willing to take part in the study.
Genotyping will be performed in our laboratory once all 200 samples have
been submitted. The standard £48 fee for the combined test will be waived for
participating dogs, and owners will not be charged for email notification of
their dog's results. A certificate can be sent to owners on request for a £10
fee to cover administrative costs. Individual test results will remain confidential.
Once data analysis is complete, a report summarising the overall findings will be
sent to you for distribution to the participating breed clubs and other interested parties.
The guidelines for selection of participating dogs are as follows:
Each of the 200 dogs should have a unique dam
Ideally, each dog would also have a unique sire, but as this may be difficult
to achieve we ask that no more than four dogs out of the total 200 share any one sire
Only one dog can be tested free of charge per owner
Dogs must have been born on or after 1st July 2005
Dogs must be registered with the UK Kennel Club

Assisted
MRI Scans
The
committee have decided to donate money from Club Funds to assist any member
of the club wishing to have one of their dogs MRI scanned. The scheme will be limited to 25 dogs (one
dog per membership) for the time being and £100 will be given to each owner
on receipt of the original invoice from the neurologist. This offer cannot be
used in conjunction with any other club scheme.
Members
wishing to take advantage of this offer may use a neurologist of their choice
and should contact the secretary Mrs. Diane Searle for further information.
Health
Fund
We have
also set up a Health Fund to benefit Cavaliers in the future. Any ideas from members on fund raising will
be most welcome. Please contact our

FOETAL TISSUE RESEARCH PROJECT

We all know how devastating the death of a puppy can
be, or the arrival of a stillborn pup, and what a waste we feel it to be.
However, Dr Imelda McGonnell
of the Royal Veterinary College
is researching in to cranial and skull development and feels that information
derived from the following material:
1.
Aborted material
2.
Still born material
3.
Death within 48 hours
of whelping
will provide insight in to a number of
conditions, including both canine and human SM and possible genetic
links. Dr McGonnell
would welcome the participation of breeders in this research, and you are
asked in the first instance to get in touch with Sheena Stevens (Kilnshena@Hotmail.com – 01884 821080)
who will be happy to provide you with information and instructions.
All details are completely confidential, and breeders
will eventually receive a report from Dr McGonnell
on any specimen provided.
THE PROMISE
All of us who have had a cherished dog put to sleep recognise a great many things.
Not the least of which is how difficult it can be - and yet how we start to know
that the time is coming near.
The FTR team have learned a great deal from the neonatal tissue that breeders
have provided to them and would now like to be able to compare those findings
in older dogs. They are asking that breeders and owners, if they feel able, make
a promise to donate their older dogs after death.
As in life, so in death - each dog and owner is individual, and the relationship
special. Cavaliers are special. The FTR team recognise that fact, and arrangements
will be tailored to suit that relationship. Your dog will go on to help other dogs
and - again as in life - will also help humans.
The promise can be made at any time, and you are asked in the first instance to
contact Sheena Stevens (Kilnshena@hotmail.com)
01884 821080 who will liaise with you and the team when you find you are able to
fulfill it. Thank you.
Wonderful News!!
The Wellcome Trust are granting £:400,000 for an Integrated Veterinary Training Fellowship over a period of six years. It's a very prestigious award for one of Dr McGonnell's students, and she, Dr McGonnell, Dr Holger Volk and Dr Albert Basson of King's College, London, will be involved in studying cerebellar growth.

Assisted MRI Scans (Bristol)
Downs referrals has extended a scheme currently being run by Clare Rusbridge (RCVS and European Specialist in Veterinary
Neurology) at Stone Lion Veterinary Referrals in London, to screen breeding
stock.
The scheme comprises a reduced scanning fee - £250+VAT, with a further 20%
discount applicable for clients with multiple dogs. This will provide a
limited MRI-study which will be submitted for grading and certification by
Clare Rusbridge.
Clients need to be made aware that a veterinary consultation will not be
included as part of this fee in order to keep costs down. Dogs will be
admitted by a veterinary nurse, but all pre-anaesthesia examinations and
scans will be supervised by a veterinary surgeon. Again, there will be no
consultation upon discharge to discuss the findings prior to receiving the
certification from Clare Rusbridge.
Participating dogs must be free of any signs of the disease (it is not
intended to be used as a cut-priced way of confirming the breeder's
suspicions in clinical cases…) or other known anaesthetic risk, and they will
be required to fill in a consent form pertaining to this.
To receive a certificate, owners will also need to provide proof of
ownership, and the dog's pedigree name with registration.
Please contact us with any additional queries you might have regarding this
service.
Kind Regards,
Damien Bush.
